Solicaz: Representing French Amazonia at COP16

Nov 20, 2024 | 2024, Salon

Solicaz proudly participated in the 16th Conference of the Parties on Biodiversity (COP16), held in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024.

This global event tackled urgent challenges such as halting ecosystem degradation, protecting endangered species, and promoting sustainable resource use. As biodiversity declines at an unprecedented rate, COP16 focused on developing actionable solutions to protect natural ecosystems.

For the first time, civil society played a key role in biodiversity advocacy through the “Green Zone,” known as La COP de la Gente. Solicaz was among 220 exhibitors presenting innovative projects on ecological restoration and soil conservation. With over 500,000 attendees, this was a valuable opportunity to emphasize the crucial role of soil biodiversity in sustaining ecosystems and agriculture.

Notable outcomes of COP16 included the creation of a subsidiary body to involve indigenous communities in biodiversity decisions, the launch of the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund to finance conservation, and the Cali Fund, which aims to share the benefits of genetic resources between developed and developing countries.

Prominent initiatives like the Barrera Forestal del Amazonas and the Tropical Forest Finance Facility highlighted the importance of protecting tropical forests, which are vital for global biodiversity.
